Meet our founder, Rumbie Mutsiwa (pronounced: ‘Room-B’ ‘Mootsee-wah’) – the force behind the curl movement.
Hi there, I’m Rumbie Mutsiwa (pronounced: ‘Room-B’ ‘Mootsee-wah’) – Founder of Rumbie & Co., and fierce lover of all things curls.
With expertise in wavy, curly and afro hair, my story is steeped in hair artistry, but my passion extends well beyond this. Creating a community that recognises, understands and truly celebrates curls is my driving purpose.
Through rigorous research and a whole lot of listening, my team and I have developed a specialist curl regime that nourishes and simplifies. By making the science of curls simpler and more enjoyable than ever, we’re on a mission to help as many people as possible to embrace their curls with confidence, and thrive.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe, I grew up learning the art of curl maintenance, with techniques and traditions passed down through generations. It’s literally in my DNA. This heritage also instilled in me a deep understanding of the importance of community. From a young age, I was drawn to enriching the lives of others.
At the age of 17, I moved to Australia to study psychology, and commenced a career in geriatrics shortly after. But surrounded by friends and family struggling to find a salon with specialist afro expertise, I identified a clear gap in the market and decided to seize the opportunity. From that moment, I’ve been dedicated to helping others to simplify, better understand, and celebrate their curls!
What started as a braiding and weave salon in my loungeroom soon became an overrun family and friends salon with an endless waitlist. After renting chairs in multiple renowned salons, and with a completed apprenticeship in hand, I took the plunge and opened the first Rumbie & Co. salon in 2015.
Today, Rumbie & Co.’s expanded flagship salon is based in Chippendale, offering a range of specialist curl treatments, services, proprietary products. In 2019, I proudly established the Rumbie & Co. Academy – an acclaimed online and on-site training institute upskilling hairdressers in the art of curls.
While my personal curl style is ever changing, my mind and heart are always fixed on helping, welcoming, and connecting with new members of the curl community. I look forward to meeting you soon!
